SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY INSURANCE (SSDI)
Provides insurance for workers and their children or surviving spouses who have Social Security coverage. Adults must have a physical and/or mental condition that keeps them from doing any "substantial" work for at least a year or is expected to result in death. Applicant information is given to the State Disability Determination agency where claims specialists and doctors review the information and make a decision. They may request additional information or provide the applicant with an exam or special test at no cost.
